Filing a Claim for Alaska Unemployment Insurance

The two ways that you can file for unemployment in Alaska are to do it over the phone by calling 1.888.252.2557 or online at http://myalaska.state.ak.us and then selecting the “unemployment insurance benefits” option.

In either case, there is some basic information that will be needed. It is important to have the information ready when initially filing for unemployment and if you don’t, you may not be able to complete your initial claim.

When you are ready to file your claim, make sure to have the following information available as you may be asked to provide it in order to complete the process.  The information includes your social security number (SSN), driver’s license or State issued ID card number, your mother’s maiden name, the name and address of your most recent employer, and your dates of employment for your most recent employer.

Appealing your claim for unemployment in Alaska

Please know that just because you file an Alaska unemployment claim, it doesn’t necessarily mean that you will automatically receive benefits.  There are instances when you might be denied the benefit and if this occurs, you have the option to appeal the decision. If you choose to appeal your unemployment claim it is very important that you do so prior to the deadline given.

Here is information regarding appealing your claim in Alaska State:

  • You may appeal your determination for benefits in Alaska State via telephone by calling 1.800.232.4762.
  • Appeals are done through an appeal hearings process. The first appeal is filed to the Appeal Tribunal which is reviewed by a staff of Hearing Officers.  The second level of appeal is to the State Department and is determined by the Commissioner of Labor.   A final appeal can be made to the Superior Court.
  • You must submit your appeal(s) in the proper order and receive a decision before proceeding on to the next level of the appeal process.
  • It is important that you attend your hearing at your scheduled time and that you show up on time.  Failure to show up on time to a hearing may result in your claim appeal being denied.
